How shoppable video apps bill you, and why per-view pricing costs most when it works
Many Shopify video apps do not charge a flat monthly fee. They charge for how much your videos get watched, either as plan tiers priced by monthly views or as a base fee with overage once you pass an included quota.
That structure has a consequence worth working out before you install anything. Your app bill rises in the months your store does well, and it rises fastest on the pages you worked hardest to get traffic to.
What counts as a view
A view is usually counted when the player loads and starts, not when a shopper watches to the end and not when they buy. So the number you are billed on is closer to your pageview count than to your order count.
Two things follow from that.
First, the same shopper can generate several views in one session. A carousel on a collection page with four videos in the viewport can count four times before anyone clicks anything.
Second, traffic that never converts still costs you. Say a Reddit thread sends 3,000 curious visitors and no orders. That is 3,000 or more views on the bill.
The arithmetic
Run your own numbers rather than trusting a plan name. You need three figures, and you already have all of them.
| What to pull | Where it lives |
|---|---|
| Monthly pageviews on pages that will hold a video | Shopify Analytics, sessions by landing page |
| Videos visible per page | Your own layout decision |
| Included views and overage rate | The app's pricing page, often in a footnote |
Multiply the first two. That is your monthly view volume, near enough. Then check which plan tier it lands in, and check what happens on the month you double it.
The doubling case is the one that matters. A store doing 20,000 views a month sits comfortably in a mid tier. The same store during a Black Friday week, or after one video does well on TikTok, can pass 60,000. Under tiered pricing you are moved up a plan. Under overage pricing you pay per thousand on everything above the quota. Either way the invoice arrives in the month you were counting the win.
Why this pricing exists
It is not arbitrary. Hosting and delivering video costs the vendor real money per byte served, and that cost does scale with views. Charging for views passes a real cost through.
The problem is what it does to your decisions. Once the bill tracks views, you start making layout choices to keep the number down: fewer videos per page, videos below the fold, video off the collection pages entirely. Those are billing decisions dressed up as merchandising decisions, and they work against the reason you installed the app.
Four questions for a pricing page
- What exactly triggers a billable view? Player load, autoplay, or a watch threshold? The answer changes the number by a lot and it is rarely on the pricing page.
- What happens when I pass the quota mid month? Does the app bill overage, or does it stop showing your videos until you upgrade? The second answer is the expensive one and it tends to live in the terms rather than the pricing table.
- What happens if I cancel mid cycle? Ask whether the unused part of the period comes back to you, because that answer is often missing from the pricing page.
- Is the number I am billed on visible to me in real time? If you cannot see the count climbing, you cannot plan around it.
What Maxproof charges
One plan, $10 a month or $100 a year, full feature set. We never bill by views, and there is no view quota to pass. Cancel and we refund the unused portion of the period.
That is a deliberate trade. We eat the delivery cost variance so that your layout decisions stay merchandising decisions. Put the carousel on every collection page. Run the pop-up on the pages that get the most traffic. The invoice is the same either way.
There is a free 7 day Pro trial through the invite code on the homepage. Redeem the code before you subscribe, not after. A store that already has an active subscription cannot redeem, and the 7 days are lost.
Maxproof puts your TikTok and Instagram videos on your storefront as shoppable components. $10 a month, never billed by views.
